🍷 Port Houses & Their Tours

Fourteen lodges in Vila Nova de Gaia, and exactly which tours and tastings each one runs.

🥂 Port In Five Minutes

Port is a fortified wine: fermentation is stopped early with grape spirit, which keeps the natural sugar in and pushes the strength to about 20 percent. Everything is grown in the Douro Valley, then aged in Gaia or at the quinta. Ruby styles age in sealed vats and stay dark and fruity. Tawny styles age in small oak casks, losing colour and gaining nut and caramel notes, and are sold by average age as 10, 20, 30 or 40 year old. Vintage port is a single outstanding year bottled young to age for decades. LBV is a halfway house. White and rose ports round out the family, and a white port with tonic is the local aperitivo.

🎫 How A Lodge Visit Works

📍
Almost every lodge is in Vila Nova de Gaia, across the Dom Luis I bridge from the Ribeira, and most are within a ten minute walk of each other.
🕐
A standard guided tour runs 45 to 60 minutes and ends with a tasting of two wines, usually a white or ruby and a tawny.
⬆️
Premium options add aged tawnies, single quinta wines, a vintage room or a chocolate or cheese pairing. These cost more and usually need booking.
🗣️
Tours run in English, Portuguese, French and Spanish at most lodges. Check the language of your slot when you book.
💶
Tasting fees are almost never refundable against a bottle, unlike some wine regions. Budget for the tasting and the bottle separately.
🚫
Two lodges a day is plenty. Port is 20 percent alcohol and the tastings add up faster than you expect.
